USE: Operate at a dilution of 15-20% depending upon
the degree of corrosion protection required. Fill the
mild/stainless steel tank three-quarters full with warm
water and add Blackfast 933 slowly whilst mixing vigorously.
APPLICATION: Following the water
rinse immediately after the blacking operation, the components
are immersed in the tank of Blackfast 933 either in a
basket or suspended individually for five minutes. Agitate
small items and rotate those with complicated shapes.
They are then placed on a draining board.
To accelerate the drying time and improve
the quality of the corrosion preventative film, operate
the bath at 60o-70oC. Allow 45 minutes drying time before
handling the components. Tests indicate that corrosion
protection improves dramatically if components are dried
quickly at elevated temperatures 5-10 minutes at 80oC.
Strong air currents should not be used as they blow the
emulsion off the item.
The solution should be agitated during
use.
TANK MAINTENANCE: The bath level
needs to be topped up every day to replace water losses
due to evaporation. In hard water areas the life of the
bath will be extended by using demineralised water. Viscous
scum will need to be removed regularly.
The operating life of the bath will
be determined by the amount of work processed and can
be dramatically shortened if a quantity of blacking solution
is 'carried over' into the bath. An exhausted bath is
indicated by a rapid increase in solution viscosity to
a consistency of yoghurt. The solution will then need
to be replaced.
SOLUTION STRENGTH CONTROL: Fill
a 100cc graduated measuring cylinder with 90cc of Blackfast
933 emulsion to be determined. Add 10cc of 1 molar aqueous
hydrochloric acid and shake the cylinder for 1 minute.
Allow the cylinder to stand overnight. The following day
determine the amount of separated oil in ml. The % concentration
by volume then = ml of separated oil x 100/90.
Addition of new Blackfast 933 should
be made by pre-mixing a concentrated solution of equal
parts of 933 and warm water. This emulsion is added to
the tank whilst mixing.
Shelf life of the concentrate solution
at ambient temperature: 1 year.
